Hello FreeGameDev community!
I'm Emma Caputo, a researcher at the University of Barcelona investigating how people acquire English skills through gaming environments. For my project, I rely on completely free and open source platform to collect language data ethically. As members of the FOSS community, I thought you might appreciate both participating in and learning about research that respects user freedom and privacy.
To join this study, you need to:
- Be a non-native English speaker
- Play games (any type, not just open source games)
- Be 18+
Participants will be entered into a €250 prize draw.
What's Involved?
The online study includes a short survey and speaking task recordings about your gaming experiences. One task is with our conversational agent. All data is stored securely on self-hosted FOSS infrastructure, and we don't share anything with third parties.
You can participate here: videogames.emmacaputo.com
I'd love to hear from this community: Did any of you learn English mainly through games rather than formal education? Were any games particularly helpful for developing your language skills? Has being part of free software communities influenced your language learning?
Thanks for considering participation in this research.
