There are some major changes to the bridging incoming this weekend.
After having experimented with Conduit and Heisenbridge for Matrix channel plumbing for quite some time now, I have come to the conclusion that it isn't working well enough for our use-case (but for a private gateway it would probably work fine). Due to the shut-down of this Matrix bridge, the current FGD Matrix rooms will become permanently unavailable and the plumbed Libregaming.org Matrix channels will be temporarily disconnected.
But we are switching the Matrix Synapse and Appservice-IRC combination as also officially deployed on larger IRC networks like libera.chat. This bridge also has some downsides to it, but overall the advantages probably outweigh the disadvantages. An immediate advantage will be proper Matrix user-names in the channel participant list and thus better mentions and replies. Private messages should also work between XMPP-IRC-Matrix.
Due to various complications around domains and also the way Matrix handles room addresses, the new bridge will not be available on the same address.
I will update the links in the original post but the new connection syntax for IRC rooms from Matrix will be something like #irc_#general:matrix.f-hub.org
, where the #irc_
part is fixed and the #general
part can be any channel name on our IRC network (yes it is finally a proper portal/gateway). It is planned to allow connecting via a simplified syntax from the freegamedev.net
domain in the future, but this will not be immediately possible.
In general this marks a change in the primary address of our IRC network. As you might have noticed it has been also available via irc.f-hub.org
(port 6697) for a few weeks now and that will become the primary address for IRC this weekend as well.
irc.freegamedev.net
will hopefully continue to work, at least if your IRC client supports SNI (most seem to do). If you end up having connection issues just connect via irc.f-hub.org
instead, other than the domain everything should be the same.
Sadly our XMPP gateway on irc.freegamedev.net
is also effected by this change and we will have to shut it down because this SNI related issue. There will be a new XMPP gateway at irc.f-hub.org
that should work exactly the same, but MAM history and your configured IRC SASL credentials stored on the old gateway will be reset. Sorry for that.
Edit: being investigated, for now the XMPP bridge on irc.freegamedev.net seems to still work despite the IRC network address change.
F-hub.org is still a work in progress, but I hope it will become a sort of umbrella organisation for Freegamedev.net, but without the exclusive focus on FOSS games, rather FOSS software more generally. The main service will be a federated git forge (Forgejo), but various additional services are a work in progress. Stay tuned.
