Phantom Overload

Phantom Overload is a WIP atmospheric first person shooter game where you hunt – and are hunted by – phantoms in a procedurally generated world. After more than a year of sporadic development, the time has come for a test release. That is, both to test releasing and perhaps ~~trick~~ convince someone to test the game by having a release. The source code is runnable with Godot 4.2, but single-file x86_64 executables of the game for Linux/X11 and Windows Desktop are available on the releases page.

You tricked me. And for a moment there I thought I was actually playing the first smooth-running Godot game in human history... but alas.

Interesting concept with the hard-to-spot enemies. Have you considered adding a gamma correction setting?

A pair of spectral spectacles might make them more visible in certain situations, along with some smoke bombs and ektosensors.

Thanks to everyone who tried the first test release! I have just published another release to get a few quick improvements out:

Expose a few more settings
- tonemap_exposure: increase to make things brighter (Godot doesn't seem to provide an actual gamma correction setting.)
- fov (field of view): increase to see more at once
- phantom_limit: decreasing this may improve performance
Add time and kill counters
Add a death animation giving a 3rd person view

Quite a few changes have been made, so it's time for another test release!

New world type: forest
Parks in the city
New phantom appearance
A lot of new settings
View bobbing (disablable in settings)
Player footstep sounds
Ambient background noise (disablable by muting bus 3 in settings)
New phantom proximity effect: sound muffling
And a few more fixes and improvements

One thing I'm looking for feedback in is audio balancing: how are the new footstep sounds and background noise? Of course, any feedback that comes to mind is still welcome!

Hey, It's a pretty good game, I see some potential. The hard to see phantom is good game design. I have a few suggestions:
A big slightly rare red glowing phantom that's faster and has multiple lives(maybe gets more transparent as he loses health)
I think this one is hard but upgrades you can rarely get while killing phantoms or even crafting materials
I would love to see a building map but this is probably pretty hard
And I think that's about it, I might add things when after I pplay test this more

Increasing gameplay variety is definitely on the to-do list. I'll keep these in mind.

Do you mean an indoors level/world type? That would be interesting and should be doable.

I would like a kill counter and the ability to jump.

Technopeasant There should be a kill counter at the bottom-center of the screen. If not, check Settings -> gameplay -> show_kill_counter.

As for jumping, where would you like to jump to? I feel like jumping wouldn't add anything of value to the game and might even detract from the mood.

I'd feel more able to escape the phantoms if I could bunny hop.

As it stands I can't really see them until they are right on top of me.

EDIT: So I last longer as long as I move in a straight line and occasionally check behind me. And yes, there is a kill count at the bottom, just in a rather small font.
