I think a rating system would be crucial for a site like this, to sort the wheat from the chaff... like The Linux Game Tome had.

Peter I contacted the developer with the same concern and he told me that it does not have any license but I'm free to use and fork it however I want and encourage me to do it.

Donate buttons is easy to implement, the rating system maybe more complicated but I like the idea.

poVoq it is too late to discourage me because the work is done, what's left is adding more games and features. I like contentDB but I'm not attempting to copy it or any other similar database, they are all great and unique in their own way, mine will be different: I'm not going to host any game, that would be expensive and complicated and it is out of my plans.

For now I will be adding games and maybe some extra filters but in order to make sense of adding more features and spending much time on it I need to find an apropiate hosting first because the current one has a lot of limitations and make deploying and testing time consuming.

Thanks for the feedback, feel free to fork it and submit your own implementations of any of the features mentioned above!

I had a look at the repo: The original game grid doesn't seem to have a license text file, so it is not open source!

glitchapp just to make you aware, one of the many limitations the free host has is that every time I deploy it gives me a new random url and I have to update all the published links, this is ok for testing but not for long term deploying. The 100 gb free traffic is ok as long as there are no hosted games or videos. It also only gives gitlab and github as options to deploy directly from git... therefore probably a vps is necessary for long term development and deployment... but for now it's enough for testing.

I wouldn't trust that declaration if I haven't it in written form.

And if you don't apply a FOSS license it's not FOSS. You really should add a license text to your repo.

Peter it is written by email from the same email that is published on the developer's repository and I have a copy of that email, enough to me.

Peter I don't know the reasons why someone publish unlicensed code on github but I take for granted it is because they don't really care of what you do with the code, what's the point otherwise to publish source code on github? sell it afterwards? The answer the developer gave me suggest me that he does not care, but I understand your concerns and suggest to ask him directly, his email is openly published on the repository.

glitchapp Source available is not open source. Personal permission through private inbox is unfit for federation; no legal forks, not libre. Since you managed to get in touch, maybe you could convince him to add a license. It might save him answering the same question in the future.

Elouin I tried, it did not work. I'm not sure why, I though it requires an vps with the node running as a process... If you think it should work I could try again but it rendered no pages the first time...

Tried it myself and got a different result than you are, even though it still seems broken. If i see correctly it tries to fetch the Games.json from https://elouin.codeberg.page/Games.json instead of https://elouin.codeberg.page/Game-grid/Games.json(where it is obviously). I set the homepage field in the package.json to https://elouin.codeberg.page/Game-grid and so expected that to fetch it from there. I have almost 0 experience with JS and React, so idk how to fix this, but seems to be a "simple" pathing issue.

Elouin Yes I always suspected that the problem lies there. I think if you can not correct the source it is enough to correct that path on the build itself (although that's not the best way to do it).
I also have not much experience with react, I just tweaked the program to load the list from a local file instead of an external api.
I hope we solve that little issue.
