I though we could have a thread about what tools we are currently using to create games.
Just seeing lists of available tools is nice and all but it's always more interesting to hear from people that actually put them to use. Maybe by stating what we don't like about our tools we can even get some recommendations on better alternatives.

I'll start of course. As a 1MA there will be a bit of everything in here, focused on 2D pixel style games. I try to use FOSS tools only.

Framework: LÖVE
I really like this framework. Lua is nice to work with and pretty fast for an interpreted language thanks to LuaJIT. LÖVE itself is kept pretty minimal so you'll want to use libraries from the community of which there are many to choose from so you're essentially assembling your engine to fit your needs and preferences.

Text editor: Kate
I just use this because it came with KDE. I like having a graphical editor. I've been thinking of using VSCode or Codium but the idea of using an electron text editor just doesn't quite jive with me. Kate is fine for now. Does what I need.
I have tried modal editors and really liked kakoune's approach of essenially making vi's visual mode the default. If I could get that as a plugin in a graphical editor I'd be a happy camper.

Pixel Art Editor: LibreSprite
Yeah, it's essentially an outdated version of Aseprite but I think it's the best FOSS has to offer for pixel art right now. There's some other programs specifically for this bu I found them kinda janky and slow at times. Libresprite has a bit of jank and a slight tendency to crash when loading a palette from a gpl file but it largely works. Definitely one program in my toolbox I'm not quite happy with. The pixel art UI also isn't to everyone's taste I'm sure.

General Art: Krita (I still suck at this btw)
Krita is great, no complaints here. Brush engine can be slow with complex brushes but that's not a problem I run into myself.
I use an old Huion H610 Pro tablet with this but I might replace it as the pen battery is on its last leg it seems.

Music: PXTone Collab (I suck at this as well)
I was drawn to PXTone because of it's very simple functionality, and I like the general sound people get out of it, that kinda pseudo-chiptune sound. DAWs were just overkill for me and trackers too cryptic. I haven't gotten into music much yet but it seems like a good tool to learn.

Sound effects: jfxr
Just a little online sound effect generator similar to bfxr. I tend to throw the results together in PXTone to create more complex sounds.
